Before we arrived in Italy we had very little knowledge of Italian wines apart from Lambrusco, Chianti, Pino Grigio and Prosecco. Of course they are great wines but there is so much more wine to explore and savour in Italy. Each region grows and produces its own wines produced from local varieties and The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Italy has authorised over 350 different grape varieties - almost one for every day of the year ! But there a lot more indigenous grape varieties.

So much Italian wine is grown for home consumption and so the best way to try these wines in by visiting the vineyards in each area. There are also an abundance of these too and there is no substitute for local knowledge of where to go and what to try.
Marche wine is mostly famed for its excellent white wines - mainly from Verdicchio grapes which can be purchased outside of Italy. But locals will drink Passerina, Percorino and Trebbiano . Another grape variety that is grown locally is Ribona which produces excellent dry and fruity wine with a distinctive flavour.
Outside of Italy everyone seems to think that Prosecco is THE white fizz from Italy . But this is produced in Veneto and there is so much more to Italian fizz than Prosecco. Each region in Italy produces and offers fizz from all of their white grape varieties which one tried by our guests are usually preferred.

Marche also produces red wines mostly from Sangiovese and Montapulciano grapes and they are often combined to produce wines described as Rosso Piceno, although there are also some delicious Merlot wines produced locally. Another grape variety that will surprise most red wine drinkers tastbuds is Lacrima which is native to Marche and has the most amazing floral notes of violets, sour cherries and roses. If you want to try any of these wines then our hosted stays will allow you to taste and explore what Marche offers.
